Mamata Banerjee is a street smart politician. She knew that she wouldn’t be able to cope with BJP led by Narendra Modi once he settles down in his office. 2016 wasn’t a tough ride for Mamata as Modi was new in Lutyens culture and most importantly, Modi & Shah was eyeing Uttar Pradesh as their primary target That’s why, after winning the assembly election in 2016, she played this gamble to plant one of her most trusted lieutenant, Mukul Roy, in BJP. Mukul Roy brought some scraps from his previous party and projected them as valuables.
Now, the questions are, were Modi & Shah so naive that they couldn’t see this? Could they be so easily manipulated? Is it possible that someone sabotaged them for past 4 years yet they didn’t realise? The answer is simple, they might have realised and that's why, earlier, there was rumours that Mukul may return to Trinamool but their problem was not having a person with his capacity in the party. So, they were left with no option but live with it. In 2019, Mukul brought 18 Lok Sabha seats for them & they were happy. They possibly forgot that Lok Sabha had never been Didi’s ambition. She is only eager to maintain her zamindari in the state.
Mukul was sent with a mission and how successful he has been is clearly evident from the names of candidates in the 3rd phase. In spite of such blunt selection of candidates, BJP may still win because of the charisma of Narendra Modi and huge anti-incumbency factor against Mamata govt but what could have been a cakewalk for the party, has turned into a fierce battle. I believe BJP high-command has realised the game now. That’s why Amit Shah skipped such a vital meeting on candidates & forced Mukul Roy to contest.
